What is Model U.N.?

Model U.N., or MUN, stands for Model United Nations. MUN was designed to introduce and expose the younger generations to globalization and to create global awareness. Mentor MUN is an academic extracurricular team which attends several conferences a year in and out of the state of Ohio. Students attend as delegates and represent a real-world nation or diplomat at a MUN conference. The conferences are competitive both for individual students and the school team. These conferences are designed to be a "model" of the real United Nations. Delegates engage in parliamentary procedure and crisis simulations on real-world issues such as immigration, climate change, and national security challenges. Before the conference, all delegates are expected to do some research on their topics and prepare to debate with delegates from other schools in order to reach resolutions that both address the problem at hand and conform to your country’s beliefs and policies.

How much time is required?

Model U.N. is an extracurricular activity, therefore some extra time outside of school will be required to do well at conferences and win awards. Regular meetings take place on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. each week for one hour. Individual preparation occurs outside of these meetings as well. How many conferences a delegate chooses to attend affects the overall commitment. Additionally, the amount of time that each student commits to Model UN depends on how well they want to do at conference. Overall, the amount of time that someone puts in is up to them.

How do I know if Model U.N. is right for me?

MUN is for anyone who is looking to have fun, improve their public speaking skills, make friends, and broaden their knowledge on world affairs! Model UN can definitely be fun for everyone!

What do you get from Model U.N.?

Model U.N. is a must for anyone interested in politics, foreign affairs, or current events.  However, even if you do not intend to pursue those areas as a major or a career, Model U.N. is a great way to improve your confidence as a public speaker for any purpose. You will learn many skills, including collaboration and argumentation. Model U.N. is an academic extracurricular that looks great on a college application, and many colleges have their own teams so you can pursue Model U.N. further after graduation. You also get to work with other academically motivated students from Mentor and other schools and attend stimulating conferences from Cleveland to Chicago to Washington, D.C. In short, Mentor Model U.N. is a blast!
